Belcher Sea snake

Belcher's sea snake is currently recognized as the most venomous snake species in the world. This snake is many times more toxic than mainland snakes. Belcher's sea snakes are mainly found in the Indian Ocean.

Sea snakes are venomous snakes that live in seawater throughout their lives. Sea snakes have valves that close their nostrils upward. After inhaling air, they can close their nostrils and dive underwater for up to 10 minutes. The surface of the body is covered with scales, and underneath the scales is thick skin to prevent seawater penetration and loss of body fluids. The salt glands under the tongue have the ability to eliminate appropriate amounts of salt added to the body with food. Small sea snakes are half a meter long, and large sea snakes can reach about 3 meters. They rest in coastal waters, especially in brackish water estuaries, and feed on fish. The body shape of sea snakes is similar to that of land snakes. The biggest difference is their flattened sides and tail like an oar. Sea snakes are both poisonous, but their heads are mostly oval rather than triangular like non-venomous land snakes.
